A Day of Discovery With the Unique Foundation

04.05.2026

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of welcoming children from the Unique Foundation to Fregate Island for a full day of learning, exploration, and shared moments. The group included children from both Praslin and La Digue, visiting the island as part of an educational and recreational programme.

The day began with a walk through the island, where the children followed one of the nature trails to explore old pirate ruins and learn more about the island’s history. Along the way, the conservation team introduced them to some of the wildlife found here, from giant millipedes and bronze-eye geckos to several bird species spotted along the path.

At a freshwater pond, the team demonstrated how terrapin traps are checked and explained why protecting freshwater habitats is so important. Seeing conservation work in action helped turn theory into something real and memorable, showing how small actions can make a big difference for wildlife.

Later, the visit continued in the island gardens, where Bessie, our Agriculture Supervisor, shared what we grow on Fregate and how food production connects to sustainability and care for the land. Both activities were designed to spark curiosity and encourage the children to explore and value the natural environment of the Seychelles, with the hope that this next generation will continue to protect it.

The day ended on a joyful note when the children invited the entire island team to join them for a performance of traditional music and dance. Their energy, confidence, and pride filled the space and were met with smiles and applause from everyone watching. Ms Farida Camille, Chairwoman of the Unique Foundation, spoke warmly about the importance of nurturing Creole culture through music and dance from a young age.

Fregate Foundation is happy to support initiatives like this, which bring together education, culture, and nature. It was a day full of learning, laughter, and connection, and one that reminded us how powerful shared experiences can be in shaping the future.
